Australia was colonised more than 200 years ago as a penal settlement and this attitude of incarceration persists today. A Colonial Sampler references the embroidery samplers of colonial women, using two motifs to represent despair and hope. Behind the barbed wire grid is a a stylised red rose, traditionally a symbol of hope to give courage to all those still living behind wire fences all over the world.
